Custom saunas

Indoor rooms and outdoor saunas, designed around heat, benches, and air, then built and installed by the same craftsman who builds the cabinetry.

A different kind of room

A sauna is not a cabinet with a heater set inside it. The room holds high heat and moisture, over and over. Benches need the right heights for sitting and for your feet. The heater has to be placed so the room warms evenly, with stones enough to throw löyly — the steam off the stones — when you want it.

Ventilation has to be drawn, not hoped for. The shell has to keep heat in and give water a way out. Those decisions are one drawing, not a stack of products.

Wood, inside and out

Inside the hot room I use clear cedar or aspen. Both stay kinder against the skin than a dense hardwood, and both live with moisture if the room is detailed properly.

Outside the hot room the materials can change: a cooler place to change, a door, a small porch. On an outdoor sauna, thermally modified wood earns a place where the weather reaches the shell.

Indoor and outdoor

An indoor sauna is a room inside your house, detailed so the rest of the house stays dry. An outdoor sauna is a small building of its own, for a yard on Long Island. Both are drawn for the way you will use them.

I do not sell prefabricated kits, and I do not sell heaters on their own. If a heater belongs in a room I am building, it is specified with the room.

A note is enough to start

Tell me about the room.

Photographs, the town, and a plain description. I read every request myself.
