Fine carpentry and millwork

Trim, paneling, doors, and the architectural pieces that have to meet a real wall. Traditional in the joints. Current in the way the work is drawn and cut.

What this includes

Site-finished carpentry: base, casing, crown, wainscot, and full-height paneling. Passage doors and the jambs they hang in. Stair skirts, treads, and rail details when they are part of a finish package.

Beams, brackets, and the odd piece that does not have a catalog number. If it has to be scribed to an existing condition, it is this work.

The difficult part

Long Island houses, especially older ones, are out of level and out of plumb. A casing that looks simple on a drawing has to die into an existing jamb. A panel run has to cross a wall that bows.

I would rather scribe a piece than hide a gap. That preference is the whole of fine carpentry.

With your architect or builder

Send the drawings. I can price from a set, or from a walkthrough and a few photographs. If a builder is already on the job, I coordinate the details that touch their work: backing, flooring height, and when the walls are ready for trim.

A note is enough to start

Tell me about the room.

Photographs, the town, and a plain description. I read every request myself.
